Come and feel the joy as you learn the basics of the visually stunning dance form known as poi! A traditional New Zealand art form, poi spinning can help increase flexibility, strength, and coordination, while creating a new connection between mind and body. This class will focus on basic technique and theory of poi movement. Practice poi will be available for use and sale, or bring your own. No experience is necessary.
Poi is a fun and striking dance form even when performed on its own. Imagine how stunning it could be when fused with belly dance! In this workshop we will first discuss the flow of poi and how to seamlessly link one move into another. We will then explore complimentary moves between poi and belly dance and how to effectively blend the two using simple combinations and basic movement theory. At the end of the class we will practice using these combinations and flow in short combinations, leaving each student with several tools they can use to create their own unique choreography. Basic experience with poi is required.
Flow props like poi, staves and more are all the rage in the alternative dance community, but fusing them with belly dance can be surprisingly tricky! This workshop will begin with a discussion of the flow arts as a movement and how it pertains to belly dance. Students will then be invited to bring out their own flow tool and experiment in fusing it with belly dance. We will discuss hints and tricks in fusing two dissimilar dance forms and how to create dynamic combos and choreographies, harnessing the flow into energy and dance! Experience in at least one flow tool is recommended: i.e. poi, staff, hoop, or fans etc.
Pops and Locks :
Pops and locks are signature to the Tribal Fusion aesthetic. In this class we will break down some popular belly dance moves and learn to integrate pops, snaps, and recoils to create emotion and bring your music to life!
Opening your Treasure Chest:
Upper body movements are closely related to your heart chakra, which brings emotion and depth into your dance. Learn to access emotion through upper body strength and fluidity with these fun and challenging drills.
Tribal Fusion Combinations:
Tribal Fusion Belly Dance is a modern blend of traditional belly dance infused with hip-hop, modern dance and more to create a new, unique dance form that is sweeping the nation!
In this multi-level class series, you will learn the fundamentals of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance. Each class will include an invigorating warm-up designed to increase flexibility and strength, followed by an hour of drills, isolations and basic footwork.
In the second hour of class, we will put together these moves and learn a fun and funky combination that you can take home!
